A man writes about food safety, consumer protection, regulation, ultra-processed food, agricultural systems\u2026 <\/p>\n
yet at night he reads Dostoevsky, Schopenhauer, Camus, Jung, Tolstoy, and books about wars, civilizations, stars, and human consciousness.<\/p>\n
But perhaps law alone was never enough to understand people.<\/p>\n
Because the more I taught law, the more I realized that human beings are not governed by law alone. <\/p>\n
They are governed by fear, ego, hunger, loneliness, pride, love, tribe, memory, and emotion.<\/p>\n
A statute cannot fully explain cruelty. <\/p>\n
A regulation cannot fully explain greed. <\/p>\n
And no legal theory alone can explain why intelligent people still destroy each other for power, ideology, or applause.<\/p>\n
So I kept searching elsewhere.<\/p>\n
History taught me how fragile civilizations are. <\/p>\n
How societies repeat the same mistakes wearing different clothes.<\/p>\n
Philosophy taught me that intelligence does not necessarily bring peace. <\/p>\n
Sometimes it only deepens the questions.<\/p>\n
Science taught me humility. <\/p>\n
The universe is vast beyond comprehension, and human certainty is often very small.<\/p>\n
And literature\u2026 literature taught me what law never could:<\/p>\n
how a human heart breaks quietly.<\/p>\n
Perhaps that is why I could never become a narrow academic.<\/p>\n
Even when I researched food law, I was never only studying food. <\/p>\n
I was studying people.<\/p>\n
Why mothers eat last in some homes. <\/p>\n
Why corporations manipulate desire. <\/p>\n
Why governments fail to protect the weak. <\/p>\n
Why hunger exists beside abundance.<\/p>\n
Behind every regulation, there is a story about human nature.<\/p>\n
And slowly I understood something difficult:<\/p>\n
Most people do not live entirely by reason. <\/p>\n
They live through narratives, emotions, identities, fears, and invisible wounds.<\/p>\n
That realization changes the way you see the world.<\/p>\n
You become slower to judge. <\/p>\n
More careful about certainty. <\/p>\n
A little quieter.<\/p>\n
Sometimes you even feel distant from society\u2014<\/p>\n
because you begin to notice how much of modern life is performance.<\/p>\n
People perform success. <\/p>\n
Perform morality. <\/p>\n
Perform outrage. <\/p>\n
Perform confidence.<\/p>\n
And yet, beneath all that noise, most people are simply afraid:<\/p>\n
afraid of insignificance,<\/p>\n
afraid of loneliness,<\/p>\n
afraid of being forgotten.<\/p>\n
Including your father.<\/p>\n
There were times in my life when I felt deeply disappointed with institutions, with intellectual culture, even with humanity itself.<\/p>\n
I saw shallow ideas become popular because they were fashionable. <\/p>\n
I saw loud people become influential while thoughtful people disappeared quietly. <\/p>\n
I saw complexity lose to slogans.<\/p>\n
But still, every morning, I entered the classroom.<\/p>\n
Not because I believed the world was perfectly rational or fair. <\/p>\n
But because I believed abandoning sincerity completely would make the darkness worse.<\/p>\n
So I continued teaching.<\/p>\n
Perhaps that is what dignity really is:<\/p>\n
continuing your work carefully, even after seeing the imperfections of the world.<\/p>\n
And maybe that is also why I wanted you to learn widely.<\/p>\n
Do not become trapped inside one discipline. <\/p>\n
A lawyer who never studies history becomes dangerous. <\/p>\n
A scientist who never studies philosophy becomes arrogant. <\/p>\n
A philosopher who never understands ordinary human suffering becomes detached from reality.<\/p>\n
Try to understand the world from many windows.<\/p>\n
And remember this carefully:<\/p>\n
Knowledge alone will not save you. <\/p>\n
Fame will not save you. <\/p>\n
Even intelligence will not fully save you.<\/p>\n
But curiosity may keep your soul alive.<\/p>\n
And kindness\u2014quiet, ordinary kindness\u2014<\/p>\n
may keep you human.<\/p>\n
